Happy birthday to my one and only sister, Kirsten!

Congratulations on being a quarter of a century old! 🙂
Becky and I arrived home today to find that the Carbon Monoxide Elves had visited us while we were away:
CO Detector
|ppp
As part of a [new Massachusetts law](http://www.mass.gov/dfs/osfm/pubed/firesafetytopics/carbon_monoxide_safety.html):
For buildings with fossil-fuel burning equipment or enclosed parking areas, the new regulations require carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home and within ten feet of each sleeping area and in habitable portions of basements and attics.
At least we didn’t have to pay for it!
That’s how much time is left until our due date! Here’s what’s been going on recently in our baby world…
No, not [that baby](http://prwdot.org/category/baby/). This one:
(You can see all of the photos [here](http://prwdot.org/gallery2/v/geekiness/macmini/).)
We purchased a [Mac mini Core Duo](http://www.apple.com/macmini/) on Saturday at the [Rockingham Park Apple Store](http://www.apple.com/retail/rockinghampark/) in Salem, NH (no sales tax!). We were originally thinking of getting the new [iMac](http://www.apple.com/imac/), but we opted to get the mini for several reasons:
* We don’t need or want the built-in iSight that comes with the iMac.
* We already have a good keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
* I don’t like the [mouse](http://www.apple.com/mightymouse/) that comes with the iMac, anyway.
* The mini is almost as fast as the lower end iMac we were considering, and way, way, way faster than the 450 MHz PowerMac G4 that was our main machine. For proof, check out the [XBench comparison](http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=158924&doc2=162350) of these two specific machines.
* We were able to get more RAM and hard drive space for the mini than we would have been able to afford with the iMac, due to the cost savings of not having the iSight, keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
We bought just the base model (512 megs RAM, 80 gb hard disk) at the Apple Store, so that we could buy less-expensive add-ons [elsewhere](http://www.macsales.com/). You can definitely feel the pinch with only 512 megs of RAM. When running several applications at the same time, for example iPhoto, Safari, Adium, and Mail, there is a bit of lag when switching back and forth, because the system has to take one application out of RAM and write it to disk, while reading another application off of disk and into RAM (also known as swapping). That should be solved, however, when the 2 GB RAM upgrade arrives from OWC later this week. More RAM means less swapping and less waiting when switching applications.
Beyond the lag when switching applications, performance is quite impressive. Most of the typical tasks like email, instant messaging, and web browsing aren’t dramatically faster than they were on the G4/450. It’s in the multimedia applications that the mini really shines. I haven’t had much chance to use iMovie, but iPhoto is extremely impressive… the speed is just amazing. I’m really looking forward to playing around with iLife ’06.
We’re also getting a [miniStack v2](http://www.newertech.com/ministack) with a 320 gb, 7200 RPM hard drive, which will give us plenty of storage space, not to mention a faster disk than the mini’s included 5400 RPM model. It also provides some extra USB ports and extra FireWire ports (handy, since the mini only has a single FireWire port).
I’m pretty excited about this purchase, because it’s the fastest Mac we’ve ever owned. I started with a Mac clone in 1997, running with a 180 MHz PowerPC 604e processor. Then I bought a PowerBook G3 400 MHz in 2001, just after the first PowerBook G4’s were introduced. Most recently, we purchased a PowerMac G4 450 MHz to replace the Mac clone. Jumping up to a Dual Core 1.66 GHz is a huge step.

Happy second anniversary to [Jeremy and Angela](http://www.thebiggspicture.org/)! We are very proud to have been there for the beginning, and we’re glad that we’ve been able to stay in touch and get together with them every now and then. I’m also glad that Jeremy is getting back into posting: he even wrote up a glowing [anniversary post](http://thebiggspicture.org/2006/03/06/milestones-and-miracles/)!
Cheers!
Last night, [Jenny](http://raingirl3179.livejournal.com/) hosted a ‘Pseudo St. Patrick’s Day Party’ at her apartment. It was the first time we had been up there since she got some real furniture, and I must say it was quite a cozy place! [Jeremy and Angela](http://www.thebiggspicture.org/) and [Chris, Naomi and Carl](http://members.verizon.net/mocasonline/) were also there. We had plenty of good food, including Irish soda bread and some type of cheesy vegetable soup brought in by Mrs. Rainville. We also watched [Darby O’Gill and the Little People](http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0052722/), a funny little Walt Disney film from 1959 featuring none other than Sean Connery!
I had decided to just bring the camcorder, so I shot a bit of video and took a few photos. You can find the photos [here](http://prwdot.org/gallery2/v/events/2006/pseudo_st_pats/). Alas, the camcorder’s built-in camera is just not that great at taking photos indoors in low light. Next time I’ll bring the real camera!
I wish that our blog had smell-o-vision. It is awfully hard to describe the wonderful smell coming from our kitchen right now. Becky is making meatballs and sauce. Yum!

As is our practice, this batch will be separated into plastic containers and then frozen. The resulting frozen packets can be used at any time to help make a delicious dinner!

We’ve *mostly* completed Michelle’s [February Hometown Six](http://mikao.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_mikao_archive.html#113926251616343914), so [here are the photos](http://prwdot.org/gallery2/v/etcetera/hometown_six/february/)! We do still need to get a photo of the ‘shopping complex’, but since we don’t really have one within a short walk of our apartment, and I don’t regularly drive past one (in our hometown), we’ll have to make a special trip to catch it. 🙂 So in the meantime, we’ve ‘cheated’ and posted a Google satellite photo of one of our shopping centers.

This past weekend, Becky and I took a trip up to [Montreal](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal). Becky’s parents had given us [Marriott](http://www.marriott.com/) gift certificates for Christmas so that we could have one last getaway before our baby was born. Neither of us had visited Montreal before, and it was a place we both wanted to go, so even though it’s a bit cold this time of year, up we went!
Highlights of the trip:
– Discovering that rural Quebec is much like rural Ohio.
– [SpringHill Suites Old Montreal](http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/YULSH), our hotel. Great location, cozy suites, nice free breakfast. A much fancier hotel than we would normally stay in, but since we didn’t have to pay for it… 🙂
– Dinner at [Restaurant du Vieux Port](http://www.restaurantduvieuxport.com/). Delicious peppercorn steak, cozy atmosphere, right around the corner from our hotel.
– [Montreal High Lights](http://www.montrealenlumiere.com/), a festival designed to light up the cold dreary nights of February in Montreal. We did the [Ice Slide](http://www.montrealenlumiere.ca/english/action.lasso?&-response=DetailsImpression.lasso&-Token.NoTitre=1581) and saw [Choreography for Snowplows](http://www.montrealenlumiere.ca/english/action.lasso?&-response=DetailsImpression.lasso&-Token.NoTitre=1514) (like [Blue Man Group](http://www.blueman.com/) with snowplows).
– The [Underground City](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_city%2C_Montreal).
– The [McCord Museum](http://www.mccord-museum.qc.ca/en/) of Canadian History.
– [Parc Jean-Drapeau](http://www.parcjeandrapeau.com/accueil.asp).
– The [Montreal Biosphère](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Biosph%C3%A8re).
– [Casino Montreal](http://www.casino-de-montreal.com/montreal/nav/en/home). We didn’t gamble, but we did enjoy their buffet!
– [Parc Olympique](http://www.rio.gouv.qc.ca/), site of the 1976 Summer Olympics. We took a ride up the funicular to the Montreal [Tower Observatory](http://www.rio.gouv.qc.ca/pub/visiter/accueil.jsp), as well as a guided tour of the stadium. Very cool!
– [Poutine](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine). Not a dish I would regularly want to eat, but an interesting regional delicacy nonetheless.
– [St. Joseph’s Oratory](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Joseph%27s_Oratory). Second largest basilica dome next to St. Peter’s.
We’d definitely like to visit Montreal again, but next time we’ll do it when the weather is a bit warmer!

I’ve been having some issues with the left tires on the Corolla recently, and this culminated yesterday when one of them went entirely flat while I was at work. Luckily, I had a compact spare tire, so I was able to get home. Today I drove over to [Town Fair Tire](http://www.townfair.com/) in Danvers on the recommendation of a co-worker. They checked the flat tire in front, as well as the tire in back that had been slowly leaking air for a while. Turns out that the front tire had a bad valve, which they fixed, and the rear tire had … a NAIL stuck in it. They removed the nail and patched the tire. I’d say they spent about a half hour or 45 minutes working on my car. How much did all of this cost me? Not one cent. I was incredulous when they told me I was “all set”, but it’s true. I had seen on their website and store signs that they did free flat repairs, but I assumed that was for existing customers. Nope! They’ll do it for anyone. I guess the idea is that you’ll be impressed by their service level and come back when you actually need to purchase new tires. Well, it certainly worked for me! I’ll definitely be heading back to [Town Fair Tire](http://www.townfair.com/) for my next tire purchase. Their tire prices are very good, and they offer some very nice services.
Kudos to Town Fair Tire! Highly recommended!
