A Shot in the dark.

Earlier today ***Ben|http://www.theholtsite.com*** posted a little essay contest. While talking about his newly purchased iMac he mentioned that it came with an iPod Mini that would be surpurflous in his household. He suggested an essay contest to determine a new home for the little Mini. Tongue-in-cheek as it may have been, I decided that it would be worth the required 1000 words if there was a chance of scoring an iPod.

There were two essay topics to choose from: “Why Macs are near and dear to my heart” and “Steve Jobs is a Hottie”. I chose the latter. So, for your reading enjoyment I have encluded the entire essay here. Just click to read the full article!

Beauties, Geeks, Brats and Fast Food

Over the last few days I’ve seen some interesting things on TV and DVD.

We got ***Super Size Me|http://www.supersizeme.com/*** from Netflix on Tuesday and popped it in the player during dinner… a HEALTHY dinner of tortilini and pesto. I’ve heard great things about this documentary and was looking forward to finally seeing it. I liked it. I have already read ***Fast Food Nation|http://prwdot.org/archives/002009.html*** and so I was not surprised at much of the facts laid out in the film. Even still, the effects of all those hamburgers on his liver was shocking! Watch it and make your own decisions about whether or not to visit MickyD’s.

I’ve also been watching, over the last few weeks, the WB’s ***Beauty and the Geek|http://www.thewb.com/Shows/GenericShow/0,11116,228773,00.html***. I wasn’t sure I would make it past episode one (considering that it was the brain child of Ashton Kutcher!) but by the end of the premiere I was hooked. The premise was that they would pair intellectual guys with not so intellectual gals and subject each team to a series of challenges that would test the smarts of the gals and the social skills of the guys. Hopefully, each contestant would learn to appreciate the skills and talents of the others. In any case, I found it terribly entertaining. It was great to see these beautiful girls come off their social high horses and actually enjoy being wiht the geeks…and it ws fun watching the geeks open their eyes to something other than science or medicine or music.

And finally… have you seen the recent commercials for ***Brat Camp|http://abc.go.com/primetime/bratcamp/***? It is a new ‘reality show’ about trouble kids who are sent to boot camp by their parents in a last ditch effort to turn their lives around. Judging by the ads, the kids go camping, hiking, rock climbing and are forced to reevaluated their lives. — Last weekend I saw that commercial with five other family members and five out of six of us declared, “That looks like fun!” It almost make me want to become a problem child just to get to go on that adventure!!

weekend events

After a busy week I was glad to have some of the weekend to spend with my Peter.

We had a nice date on Friday night. I got home from work and we headed out to the movies to see ***Cinderella Man|http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0352248/***. I wasn’t sure that I woud like it…since it was a “boxing” movie and all, but I did! The story was entertaining, even if it was a bit violent and the historical references were slightly forced. I loved having my stereotypes broken. Kudos to the writer/director/whatever that can change my opinion or challenge my preconceived notions.

Saturday was a day spent at home. We did some cleaning and organizing and got some nice productive things done while getting to spend time together.

Falling into the category “Things I probably would not have done/seen had it not been for meeting Peter” was the dvd we watched on Saturday night. It was the second half of the first season of ***The 4400|http://imdb.com/title/tt0389564/***, a USA channel SciFi show. It is an interesting show based on the idea that 4400 people from the 20th century were abducted and then returned in a ‘super human’ form. The plot follows these “returnees” as they attempt to get on with their lives. It is a great SciFi show that has enough plot and human interest to keep my attention.

I had to work on Sunday, but we had a lovely evening as Peter mentioned below.

Sometimes the simple times are the best.

I (heart) my Nalgene

It has happened to lots of people: your favorite local band goes big time and suddently EVERYONE loves them (but you loved them first!) or you buy a pair of shoes that are totally unique and then some star wears them and EVERYONE now has a pair… When something we love, for its uniquness or for its utility, beomes popular in the mainstream we tend to get jealous or resentful.

I have a similar story. ***Nalgene|http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/*** water bottles have been around since the 70’s and have been very popular with the hiking/camping/backpacking crowd. They are extremely durable, fairly lightweight, have a loop to hang them from your bag and are all around great.

I bought my 32 ounce, wide mouthed bottle in 1999 when I was preparing to backpack through ***The Three Sisters|http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/north_america/three_sisters.html*** in central Oregon. I discovered then what other hikers had known for decades…that this was a perfect camping water bottle. Definately worth the 5 bucks I paid for it and destined to be a fixture on my future camping trips. Upon returning to civilization (read: spring semester, 2000, Gordon College) I realized, in horror, that they had become an uber trendy way for college kids to carry water around campus! Imagine my shock. I still wanted to use it, but kept is somwhat out of sight, lest I appear to be riding the bandwagon.

Now, six years later, my bottle has seen better days… It still has the original “wolf” logo and ounce markings- but they are wearing away. The masking tape lable reading: LOWE is quickly disintegrating and I’ve had to replace the blue cap due to an unfortunate incident with the dishwasher. All in all, however, it has served me well over the years and has become a world traveler first to Bolivia and then to Russia. Who could ask for more from a water bottle.

This past weekend, my trusty Nalgene got an upgrade. I laid down $2.99 of my hard earned cash and purchased a ***splash guard|http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=32128927&memberId=12500226***. This fantastic little piece of plastic slides right into the wide mouth of the bottle and keeps me from pouring half the contents right down the front of my shirt. The last few days, I have enjoyed nice dry drinking conditions, whether I’m at my desk, climbing the 5 stories of stairs in the office, or riding the commuter rail. I can only imagine how well it will work when we’re out hiking this summer.

Maybe now I’ll finally upgrade the masking tape to read: WOOD

500 mile weekend

I left Friday afternoon for ***River Vale, New Jersey|http://www.rivervalenj.org/*** to visit my dear friend ***Jennifer|http://junefourteenth.blogspot.com***. It was an uneventual trip south and I only met a little traffic on the approach to the Tappan Zee Bridge.

A major component of most trips to NJ is the visit to the Paramus IKEA, and this weekend was no different. We persued the display floor and rode the carts in the warehouse, had yummy soft serve and left with a few good bargins.

Saturday night the ***Ridgewood Gilbert and Sullivan Company|http://www.dancaster.com/RidgewoodGandS/index.htm*** had a performance of the Pirates of Penzance. Jennifer gave a fantastic performance as one of General Stanley’s lovely daughters. I also got to meet some of Jenn’s friends and co-workers, including fellow blogger, ***Marisa|http://nortonthedog.blogspot.com/***.

Sunday was filled with Family Galore. I made it to Sunday Dinner in Worcester just in time for the macaroni to be served. YUMMMMMMM. I had some nice chats with Grammy and the aunts, pitched a couple whiffleball innings with the boys and was on my way.

I met Peter at North Station in Boston and we headed over to South Boston to celebrate my Grandpa’s 84th birthday with the Lowe clan. Burgers, hotdogs and a narrated tour of our trip to Russia rounded out the night.

We got home around 10:30, a late end to a long and very fun weekend!

I’m it.

I have been tagged to complete a survey. I’ve been remiss in responding. Without further delay…

***Jennifer|http://junefourteenth.blogspot.com/*** tagged me for the ‘Movie Meme’.

1) Total number of films I own on DVD/video: seventy two (based on Peter’s count)
2) The last film I bought: I honestly can’t remember. It was THAT long ago!
3) The last film I watched: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
4) Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me (in no particular order):
Sound of Music
Pirates of the Carribean
Henry V
French Kiss
Napoleon Dynamite

Ten Things I have NOT done:
1. Danced on a bar counter 2. Hang glided 3. Been to Kansas 4. Dyed my hair 5. Met ***Michelle|http://mikao.blogspot.com*** in real life 6. Had stitches 7. Drunk a Double Light Sweet Mochachino 8. Changed my own oil 9. Shoplifted 10. Gone on a cross-country road trip

Rite of Manhood

There comes a point in every man’s life when he must go out and ***join the other men|http://gallery.prwdot.org/labor_day_03/DSCN3337*** in their persuit of the perfectly grilled burger. For Peter that day was today.

My Uncle Rich and Auntie Julie gave us a baby Weber charcoal grill when we got engaged… and we had yet to use it! Peter got the ball rolling this afternoon as he rescued it from the attic and set about ***assembling|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grilling_take_one/P1020320*** it.

He then made up the ***hamburgers|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grilling_take_one/P1020321*** and my contribution was a ***pair of ears of corn|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grilling_take_one/P1020322***. The grill was moved outside and loaded up with coal. After a few false ***starts|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grilling_take_one/P1020326*** the charcoal started to burn.

Onto the grill went the burgers and corn. Peter ***checked|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grilling_take_one/P1020334*** in a couple of times to see if it was actually cooking. Unfortunately, due to conditions beyond his control, (it was too cold and windy) the grill just wasn’t doing its job.

So, pride in hand, Peter ***finished the job|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grilling_take_one/P1020338*** inside. The dinner turned out delicious!

There and Back Again

fff|ggg|petrogradskaya/P1020009|Peter and Rebecca in St Petersburg|ggg|fff

I’ve resisted posting a review of our trip due to the risk of turning into one of those dads from the fifties… setting up the slide projector (one of those home projectors under $500) and saying “and here’s Elaine at the beach, and here’s Elaine and the kids at the beach, and here they are again ten minutes later…” You get the picture.

Still. Many of you have asked for some more details of what we did and where we went and what we saw. I’ll do my best to summarize our trip for you. I am, however, going to hide the rest of this post for those of you who are not quite as interested. Click to keep reading!

quick update

Hi. This is just a little note in between sightseeing and dinner.

We travelled safely both to and from St. Petersburg this weekend, arriving home to Moscow this morning at 8am. Our trip there was very busy, but that’s the way we like it. The weather was cold, damp, windy with a small bit of sun thrown in for good measure.

Despite the weather, we were able to take in the sights of the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Cathedral, Tsarskoe Selo, a boat tour of the canals and the Neva river, among other things.

Pictures and more are soon to follow, I’m sure.
