Adventures In Auto Repair

fff|ggg|camry_outside_shots/200205061717085_G|The Camry|ggg|fff

I enjoy driving. I like to get in the car, hit the road, and drive anywhere. Down to the corner store or across the country, it’s all good. As long as my car is working, that is. For you see, as much as I enjoy driving, I do not enjoy dealing with the mechanical side of owning a car.

When I first received the Camry from Pop-Pop (happy birthday!) in the spring of 2000, I would simply take it to the Toyota dealership and have them take care of all of the repairs. After a few years passed, it became readily apparent that they are overzealous in their estimation of needed repairs, and that they greatly overcharge for parts and labor.

The next step was to find a trustworthy local mechanic. I found a few good places in Beverly – Northeast Autolabs and Auto-Dyne, both within walking distance of our apartment. They charged less than Toyota, and were honest in their appraisals and estimates of the work that needed to be done. But even the local mechanic can be expensive, particularly if they’re installing factory-new parts.

Thankfully, my father-in-law Ken has stepped in within the past year or so to advise me on matters of auto repair, and in fact to do many of the repairs himself, as long as he has some free time and the necessary parts. Along the way, I’ve picked up a few bits of knowledge and have developed enough confidence to start fixing things on my own. What follows are some of my recent experiences and ‘adventures’ in auto repair.

Bit O’ The Vineyard

fff|ggg|vineyard_20050806/P1040363|Cross at the Tabernacle|ggg|fff

This past weekend, Becky and I took a trip down to Martha’s Vineyard. As always, there was good food, trips to the beach, chatting, sleeping, and relaxing. Very nice as always. I took a bunch of photos related to a super-secret project I’m working on. (Oooooohhh…) The rest of the photos can be seen ***here|http://gallery.prwdot.org/vineyard_20050806***!

The WoodCast!

World Wide Wood is taking a tentative dip into the ***Podcasting|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting*** waters with ***The WoodCast|http://prwdot.org/woodcast/***! There’s just an introductory, 45-second, testing-the-waters episode right now.

Oh, and the WoodCast is powered by ***WordPress|http://wordpress.org/***.

Mr. Excitement

Tonight when I got home from work, I did some really, REALLY exciting stuff. First, I finished ripping the last of our CD collection into iTunes. Then, I moved all of our physical CD collection up to the attic. After that, I sorted out the piles of bills, receipts, and mail that have been collecting on the computer desk. I shredded some stuff that needed to be shredded, filed some stuff that needed to be filed, and recycled some stuff that needed to be recycled. Then, I rearranged the items on the top of the computer desk. And finally, I took a photo of it all!

Hey Mr. Farnham, how’s that for spicing up my life? Oh yeah, you can’t beat the excitement.

The Danmark, and Boston Harbor

fff|ggg|boston_harbor/P1040104|Danmark’s Mast|ggg|fff

On Sunday, I went down to Boston to see the ***Danmark|http://soefart.inforce.dk/sw232.asp***, a Danish tall ship that was making a port of call at ***Rowes Wharf|http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/placestogo/location.php?nid=3&sid=15***. They were letting the public come on board for free tours, so I went on board and snapped some photos. Before I went on the ship, I walked along a large section of the ***Boston Harborwalk|http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/***, a surprisingly very nice parkway that runs along Boston’s waterfront. The Harborwalk is an ambitious project that eventually aims to cover all of Boston’s ocean-facing waterfronts. You can see a map of the Harborwalk, with the complete and incomplete segments, ***here|http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/placestogo/***.

All of my photos from the day can be found ***here|http://gallery.prwdot.org/boston_harbor***.

Paper House

fff|ggg|paper_house/P1030925|Paper House|ggg|fff

Becky took me on a mystery tour this morning. Our destination was The Paper House! Yes… It’s a house furnished with paper! The ***Paper House|http://www.essexheritage.org/visiting/placestovisit/listofsitesbycommunity/paper_house.shtml*** is located in the Pigeon Cove neighborhood of Rockport, Massachusetts. Though the frame of the house is made from wood, the walls and all of the furniture are lined with newspaper, covered with varnish. Desks, beds, bureaus, mantels, and more, all made with newspaper. It’s quite a piece of Roadside America… and it truly has to be seen to be understood. Amazing! Check out our ***photos|http://gallery.prwdot.org/paper_house***.

Our Netflix Queue

I’ve created a page that utilizes ***Netflix|http://www.netflix.com/***’s RSS feeds to display up-to-the-minute information on the items currently in our rental queue, as well as recent shipment activity in our queue. So if you’re interested in what we’re watching on DVD here at World Wide Wood, you’ll want to ***check it out|http://prwdot.org/netflix.html***! You can always access the link from our navigation bar under ‘Site Content’.

Feed Information Page

I’ve written up a ***feed information page|http://prwdot.org/feeds.html*** for World Wide Wood. This page has some basic information on feeds, a list of the feeds available here, and a description of each feed. So if you’re already a subscriber, you might want to check it out to see if there is a better feed for you. And if you’re not already a subscriber, you can find out what a feed is, what feeds are available, and which one would work best for you. You can always find this page linked from our navigation bar, under ‘Quick Links’.

Just another way to enjoy the content here at World Wide Wood.
