Mo’ Sno’

It’s official. The amount of snowfall in the blizzard of February 17th, 2003 eclipsed the amount dumped by the infamous Blizzard of ’78. The previous record was 27.1″ of snow dumped on Boston in 24 hours, and yesterday’s storm dumped 27.5″ of snow in the same time period. This time around, city and state officials were much more prepared, with several days advance warning. In addition, the snow was light and fluffy, not wet and cementlike as was the snow in ’78.

With all of the heavy snowfalls this season, road crews are finally back up to the level of preparedness that they were before the snow-drought of the last several years. Yesterday when I was driving to work, I saw a row of six backhoes standing at the ready in the Northshore Mall’s parking lot. This morning, as I was exiting 128-South onto the Forest St. bridge, I saw a line of eight plows all lined up and ready to go should they be needed.

It took a little extra time to get the car dug out this morning. Snow was about knee-deep, and it came all the way up past the bottom of my car door! I had to clear away some of the snow first before I could even get the door open. After I fetched the shovel and dug out around the car, I had the challenge of getting out of the parking space. Since there was a mixture of snow, slush, and ice under the tires, I had to do a little back and forth rocking action. Eventually the car rocked back and out of its space, and all was well. 🙂

J, A, P & R Go to the City

Yesterday Peter and I spent the evening with Jeremy and Angela, Some good friends of ours.

First we took the Red Line into Harvard Square and took a brisk walk to The Garage mall on JFK Avenue. Inside the Garage is a great little Vietnamese Restaurant called Pho Pasteur. YUM.

After dinner a quick stop at Ben and Jerry’s and then back on the Red Line to Alewife. We drove back home and settled in for an evening of watching “The Count of Monte Cristo” with our new little home theater system.

A very fun evening with very fun people. 🙂

Day Off

Today is President’s Day. That means that I have the day off from the Bank. Horay! I have had several sets of plans for today…all of which have fallen through. ah well. I might as well go to the gym and do something productive.

I am also waiting for the snow to start. I love all the snow we’ve gotten this winter. The more the better!

Big Sound

So the Cambridge SoundWorks warehouse sale was a success!

I came home today with a Sony STR-DE485 digital receiver, a Cambridge SoundWorks Ensemble IV Home Theater speaker system, and all the speaker cable I would ever need. The prices were definitely lower than what you’ll see on Sony and CSW’s websites. If you’re in the Boston area, and looking to buy some new audio/video equipment, I would recommend checking it out before the sale ends on Monday (the sooner the better).

Anyway, I’ve finally got the new system all hooked up, and it works quite nicely paired with our Sony DVP-NS315 DVD player and our Philips TV.

The Week’s End

Becky and I celebrated Valentine’s Day last night by babysitting for some old clients of hers. Not to worry, of course, we have already got next weekend set aside as a belated Valentine’s gift. We are going to see Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony Orchestra premiere Tan Dun’s work, The Map. They will also be performing some works by Cage, Britten, and Shostakovich. On Saturday we will be attending some of the events surrounding this premiere. And we will be staying for the weekend at the Westin Copley Place, right in the heart of downtown Boston.

As for this weekend… today Becky’s at work for the morning, and has another babysitting gig in the evening. I’m heading down to Westwood, MA for the Cambridge SoundWorks Warehouse Sale. If they have some reasonable deals, we may end up with a new sound system… if not, no big loss.

Gallery

I’ve changed the way the gallery looks just a bit – now whenever you go into the gallery, the Peter + Becky picture disappears. It was looking a little too busy there with that picture and then the regular pictures from the album all cramped together.

Gallery Integration!!

Take a look at our photo gallery. Notice anything different? Yeah! Now it looks like the rest of the site! 🙂

I finally took two seconds to read the documentation that came with Gallery, and there’s a really easy way to do it… so easy that I had a ‘duh’ moment all to myself. Well anyway. There you go – a little Valentine’s treat for all our readers! 🙂

Enjoy!

Happy Valentine’s Day

Hello all! Welcome to the Valentine’s Day Edition of World Wide Wood!

I would like to wish a happy Valentine’s Day to my wonderful wife Rebecca. We have been together for two years and five months, and we have been married for just under four of those months. Every minute continues to be better than the one before, and I can’t think of any more wonderful person to spend my life with. What a wonderful deal, to spend the rest of one’s life with one’s best friend.

To My Becky, With Love.
