Mahhhhk

Happy birthday to my cousin Mark!

ggg|nd_party/RemoteCapture_00040|Mahhhhk|ggg

This shot was taken in the Glamour Shots studio we set up at our recent ***Napoleon Dynamite Party|http://gallery.prwdot.org/nd_party***. What a great pose!

Biographical Note: Mark is one of my cousins on my dad’s side of the family – the son of my dad’s sister Joan and her husband Errol. He is a fellow lover of Taco Bell, and has recently started using an Apple laptop. He lives in Cambridge, MA and works there as well, with his company ***iZotope|http://www.izotope.com/***. Mark’s sister is none other than The Kimster, who we will soon be visiting in Russia! And, as long as I’m dropping family names, Mark’s brother is ***Scott|http://www.scottethier.com/***, a composer living in NYC.

I’m constantly in shock that I am actually related to these outstanding people!

Ides like to wish a Happy Birthday…

To my lovely Grandma, Virginia Elinor Quitadamo!

Here she is with Papa at our wedding. Don’t they look cute!?!

Gram makes wonderful Macaroni and Meatballs and Italian Christmas Cookies! Everyone should have a Grandma as beautiful and sweet and fun as she is!

So Digital, yet so Secure

My ***NewEgg|http://www.newegg.com/*** shipment arrived today. Included were the ***HEISEI 6-in-1 USB flash reader/writer|http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-180-212&depa=0*** ($14.49), and the ***KingMax 512 MB SecureDigital card|http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-155-257&depa=0*** ($39.91). Both arrived in excellent condition, and work just as advertised. Well done, NewEgg. The flash reader is pretty tiny – I ***have|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grab_bag/P1000301*** ***some|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grab_bag/P1000305*** ***photos|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grab_bag/P1000308*** if anyone’s interested. (the SD card in the shots is, obviously, not the 512 meg card – I was using that to take the photos…)

Boston Photo Blitz

I drove Becky to work in Boston today, and after parking at the ***Otis House|http://www.historicnewengland.org/visit/homes/otis.htm***, I headed out to trek around the city, putting my new camera through its paces. I covered a pretty wide swath of the city, from the North End all the way over to Symphony Hall in the Back Bay. I must say, I’m quite pleased with the results. I shot today at my camera’s lowest resolution and lowest quality level, because my larger memory card hasn’t arrived yet… nonetheless, the camera still produced excellent photos. The 12x zoom came in mighty handy, and the optical image stabilizer worked just as advertised. Here is one of the best examples of the zoom capability. These photos were both shot from the same spot in Boston Common; the first with no zoom, and the second with full 12x zoom (zoomed in to focus on a spot on top of the John Hancock Tower, from the center of the first shot):

Have Camera, Will Travel

I’ve been wanting a camera with a bigger zoom lens for a while… and I’ve been wanting a camera with more features and controls… and I felt that a trip to a place like Russia called for a camera that could take it all in. So today I picked up the ***Panasonic DMC-FZ20|http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11251&catalogId=11005&itemId=71418&catGroupId=17168&modelNo=DMC-FZ20K&surfModel=DMC-FZ20K*** at Circuit City in Salem, NH. I had ordered it on the web a few days ago for in-store pickup. That way, I was able to get the web price ($30 cheaper than in-store), and by picking it up in New Hampshire I avoided both sales tax and shipping.

The biggest improvement with this new camera is the huge zoom lens – 12x zoom (36mm-432mm). It also has an optical image stabilizer, which helps cut down on image blurring when taking hand-held shots. You can read all of the rest of the specs and features at the above link if you’re interested.

To see just what a 12x zoom means, here’s an example:

Shot with no zoom

ggg|grab_bag/P1000104|12x Zoom|ggg

Pretty big difference! Having a big zoom lens opens up all sorts of possibilities… better candid shots, better framing and composition, bringing distant or unreachable subjects closer. Anyway, here’s the camera itself (taken with its little sidekick, the Powershot A70):

ggg|grab_bag/IMG_0237|DMC-FZ20|ggg

Next to it is the detatchable lens hood. When in place, this can help eliminate lens glare and protect the lens from the elements.

Right now, I only have the 16 meg SD card that came with the camera. It holds only eight full-quality (5 megapixel) shots. But I have a 512 meg card on order, and that will hold around 250 shots. Hopefully that, in combination with nightly offloading of images onto our laptop, will help us get lots of good photos when we’re in Russia (which is coming in just over six weeks!).

The agreement is that this camera has to last me for a while – I’ve had my Powershot A70 for less than a year and a half. But with the combination of the zoom and the advanced features, I think I’ll be satisifed for a while. I certainly don’t have the money to go and buy a full-fledged digital SLR and an equivalent sized zoom lens to attach to it.

Tomorrow, I’m going to hike around Boston a bit while Becky is at work, to put the camera through its paces. To get any decent number of shots saved on the 16 meg card, I’m going to have to go down to 640×480 resolution… but I’ll deal for now. 🙂

(P.S. The A70 is in perfectly good condition, but I’m not sure what I want to do with it yet. The FZ20 is certainly not a pocket-sized camera, so it would be nice to keep the A70 around for occasions when I didn’t want to lug a larger-sized camera… but on the other hand, the A70 isn’t all that compact. I could probably sell it, along with all of its accessories (batteries, charger, compact flash cards – all of which are unfortunately useless with the new camera). Eventually I’d like to get a truly pocket sized camera that could go everywhere, and ditch the in-between awkwardness of the A70 altogether…)

blacklist_to_modsec 1.5

Tonight I’m releasing blacklist_to_modsec version 1.5. This update offers much-improved support if you want to pull your rules directly from your local ***MT-Blacklist|http://www.jayallen.org/projects/mt-blacklist/*** database. This is mostly due to a parsing routine written by ***David Phillips|http://tweezersedge.com/***, who has been invaluable in this project.

I ate the whole thing!

Becky and I just got back from a nice Friday night outing. First, we had dinner at ***Bennigan’s|http://www.bennigans.com/***, which is one of those places we go only if we have a coupon or some other incentive. In this case, we had a coupon to get the “Big Irish Deal” – their “Big Irish” hamburger, plus unlimited french fries, for $7.99. Plus, if you managed to eat the whole hamburger and all of the fries, you could win a free dessert for your next visit. Well, I am quite pleased to report that I did manage to consume the whole burger and most of the fries (Becky nibbled a few). I believe that the burger contained two 1/2 pound beef patties, plus lots of American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles, and an extra bun in the middle. In fact, it was actually quite a decent burger. And I don’t feel too bad after having eaten it. I didn’t take advantage of the unlimited fries, because I ended up being full (!). I did, however, get the coupon for a free dessert on our next visit (aha, another ‘incentive’!).

After we were sufficiently satiated, we went to Market Basket for some much-needed groceries. I did a bit o’ photography, and tossed the photos up in the ***Grab Bag|http://gallery.prwdot.org/grab_bag?page=1***. (The Grab Bag is sort of our equivalent of the ***flickr|http://www.flickr.com/*** photostream… a bunch of random photos that I don’t feel like putting in their own albums, arranged in reverse-chronological order. Start on page 1 to see the most recent photos.)

Blue, but not Suede, Shoe

I know that it is cliche, but I love that books can take you away…to new and different times and places. They offer the opportunity to experience someone else’s life.

The magic in Anne Lamott’s writing is that her characters live lives that are very different from my own, yet they experience and deal with very familiar issues. I have just finished reading aaa|Blue Shoe|1573223425|aaa by Ms Lamott. While at times I found the story/plot to be somewhat mundane the overall message was very uplifting.

Through Mattie, her 37 year old protagonist, Lamott forces the reader to consider divorce, single parent-hood, aging and ailing parents, love and faith. Alone, these are all difficult issues, but combined they make for a very complicated life. Mattie is a refreshing character because she isn’t the perfect mother, daugher, wife, girlfriend, etc. that everyone expects her to be. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, she manages to keep her head above water and provides her family with the support they need.

I enjoy reading Anne Lamott’s books because they are a light read without ever being fluffy. She’s entertaining and real and her stories offer insight into my own life.
