This pregnancy is…

VERY BORING!

So I am counting my blessings :). The constant morning sickness is over. The massive food aversions are over. The horrible cold is mostly over…and I’m feeling pretty good.

I went in for my monthly visit to the doctor today. She took my blood pressure, urine test, and weight. She measured my stomach and listened to the baby’s heartbeat. She pronounced everything, “perfect”.

That was very, very nice to hear.

The whole appointment, from walking in to walking out took a grand total of 15 minutes! For the most part this makes me happy. It is good to know that everything is going along smoothly. But there is still a teeny part of me that wants to shout, “this is the most amazing thing to happen to me!! Don’t you understand? Why do you seem so ‘business as usual’ with me??”

But again, it’s good to know that everything’s good 🙂

Hometown Six: Beverly, MA

Peter mentioned the other day that our friend [Michelle](http://mikao.blogspot.com) was organizing a year long, blog project called [the Hometown Six](http://mikao.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_mikao_archive.html#113658473513216358). Basically, the idea is to introduce her (and her readers) to our hometown via 12 monthly challenges.

The January challenge was to post 6 pictures of signage bearing the name of your hometown. Peter went on a walk around town to capture some local signs.

Beverly has been our ‘hometown’ since 2002. I moved in in the summer and Peter joined me in October when we got married. We’ve been in the area, however, since we started our freshman year at Gordon College…one town over in Wenham. It is a decent sized city; big enough to have some industry, but small enough to sponsor a ton of hometown events like ‘first night’, the ‘Santa parade’ and outdoor movies in the park during the summer.

It is also very convenient for us. Peter’s commute is a 15 minute drive and I either drive 5 minutes to the YMCA or a quick walk to the MBTA commuter train for a 40 minute train ride to Boston.

Bewitched

Sandwiched between two musicals on our Netflix queue (Newsies and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat) was the recent movie, [Bewitched](http://imdb.com/title/tt0374536/). Last summer when it was in theaters I thought about going to see it, but decided not to go. Wednesday night was the perfect time to curl up on the couch and watch this fluffy, yet enjoyable movie.

Written and directed by Nora Ephron I would have totally expected Meg Ryan in the lead role instead of Nicole Kidman. In fact, I found myself somewhat annoyed that Kidman seemed to be acting like Ryan! Every once and a while I’d catch myself noticing a gesture or vocal inflection that screamed “Kathleen Kelly”.

That’s not to mean that Nicole didn’t do a fine job. I thought that she and Will Farrell were funny and enjoyable. The movie’s plot was no big surprise to me. From the first 5 minutes I knew what was going to happen. It was painfully obvious, but still I wanted to see exactly how the events would unfold.

I really enjoyed some of the support cast as well. Michael Caine was splendid as always, Kristin Chenoweth was hilarious and I was glad to see Heather Burns in (yet another) obscure part. Burns cracks me up every time I see her.

So, that’s my 2 cents. Next on the list, one of my all time favorites…Joseph. Starring none other than Donny Osmond!

Favorite Blogs of 2005

Peter and I collectively read over 200 blogs and websites every day (thanks to [Bloglines](http://bloglines.com/)). Out of all of those blogs, there are a couple that stand out this year as our favorites. Whenever we view one of these blogs, they make us laugh, smile, think, and wonder. We keep coming back to them day after day because of their interesting insights and observations.

Christine is a fellow North Shore dweller, [Gordon](http://www.gordon.edu/) Grad, Oregon Extension alum and blogger. (We have alot in common!) Her musings center on her family, their adventures in life and geocaching, her love of [Barenaked Ladies](http://www.bnlmusic.com/), and some trials and tribulations associated with all of the above. We also love perusing her [flickr albums](http://www.flickr.com/photos/amusings/).

**[Mikao’s World](http://mikao.blogspot.com/)**, by Michelle

Representing the Great White North, Michelle blogs from chilly Canada. She talks about faith, travel, crafts, work and daily life…and her Hot Rod. We’ve been following her blog for almost 3 years now. Wow! I am pretty impressed at her artistic ability and creativity.

Congratulations to our favorite blogs of 2005. Keep up the good work!

Debut

I had a very surreal experience today. I was lying in a small room watching what should have been the most exciting ‘tv show’ of my life and what was I doing? Biting the inside of my cheek in order to stay awake.

It’s not that seeing our baby for the first time wasn’t absolutely thrilling, it was! We got to see the heart beating, the bladder, spine, brain, face arms, etc… It was so incredible to have ‘x-ray vision’ for those few minutes.

But the room was very warm. There were a few machines emitting a gentle hum. It was dark and I was lying on a semi comfortable table with a nice pillow. All the right factors were in place for a nice little nap. Fortunately, I was able to stay awake!

So, without further ado, the image you’ve all been waiting for…

A 20something Christmas

With the holiday season upon us I thought it appropriate to bring up a topic of conversation I have noticed among myself and a number of friends. What happens to Christmas when you’re an adult?

Alternately we ask: Why, now that I’m in my mid/late twenties, does Christmas not seem so much fun? Why do I feel depressed as soon as Macy’s decks out in the green and red? Why am I so much more senstive to the materialistic aspects of Christmas than I was as a kid (or even a teenager). Why can’t I just be happy about this season?

Even I have turned to Peter and proclaimed, “If I hear one more Christmas song on the radio I’m going to drive off that bridge!” I don’t really mean it, of course, but as someone who used to sing Carols all year long I’m surprised to hear myself say that.

So, why?

Odd Symptom

As luck would have it, the last few months have been full of bad pregnancy symptoms and aweful cold symptoms. I’m feeling somewhat better now, but I have fully experienced morning sickness (morning, noon and night!), constant nausea, coughing, congestion, extreme exhaustion etc.etc.

Currently I am experiencing a completely unexpected symptom. I assume it is pregnancy related, but I can’t be sure. Looking in the mirror a few days ago I noticed something different…the bottom inch of my hair seemed to be turning blond!

I called Peter into the room and he confirmed my suspicions. Very weird. Here’s a picture that just barely shows the change. In real life it looks really blond!

Recent Films

Thanks to the “bargain matinees” at Loewe’s we’ve seen two movies during the last two weekends.

First, Harry Potter. If you’ve seen it you know what you think of it.. if you’re going to see it I don’t want to spoil it and if you’re never going to see it you won’t care what I say. So, no big review for you. Sorry. I’ll just point out the things I liked… Ron Weasley’s new ‘R’ sweater, Snape’s ‘study hall’, Neville Longbottom (especially the ‘shoes around the neck’ scene). Neville has always been my favorite, so it was nice to see him grow and become his own person.

Rent. Did you see the play? Yes? You’ll probably like the movie. No? Maybe not. I loved the play in ’97 and the movie didn’t disappoint. They cut some songs and such which I was sad about, but the main plots/characters/songs were all there. I had a very hard time not singing along…too loudly.

What I did notice is that 80% of the theater that afternoon was comprised of teenagers. Kids who are 10 years younger than me. When I first saw Rent 8 years ago I thought that it was the most cutting edge, poignant, dangerous thing I’d ever seen. The topics of AIDS and homosexuality were so new to a sheltered country gal like me. The kids in this theater, however, laughed at this movie as if it was a comedy. I was shocked. They just didn’t seem to get the point. In today’s world those hot button topics from the eighties and nineties just seem mainstream today.

Well, now that I sound like an old curmudgeon…go see the movies and tell me what you think!

So. My baby brother is a quarter of a century old. We had a nice time celebrating with him over Thanksgiving.

Happy Birthday, Corey!
